Fame and Fortune by Horatio Alger

The Progress of Richard Hunter

ILLUSTRATED -.  Richard Hunter, Esq., formerly Ragged Dick, is having trouble adapting to respectable society and the working world when he is framed for theft. In Ragged Dick Series.  The adventures of Ragged Dick, otherwise known as Richard Hunter, are continued in this sequel. For years, Dick led a vagabond life in the streets of New York as a boot-black, sleeping wherever he could find free lodging. Now, a year later, he receives help from a friend, Henry Fosdick, who encourages him to spend his evenings studying.
Dick’s life changes suddenly when he saves a young boy from drowning. The boy’s father, James Rockwell, extraordinarily wealthy and generous man, rewards Dick for his heroism, and gives him a job as an errand boy.  At work he is well-liked by all, except Mr. Gilbert, the bookkeeper of the firm and Micky Maguire, a rowdy boot-black. The two plot to involve Dick in a dishonest venture, as Dick must prove his innocence, with only his reputation to aid him.
