ILLUSTRATED - A homeless New York City boy is taken west by a benefactor to work on a farm and ends up rescuing a little girl kidnapped by a vengeful Indian. Aka: Julius the Street Boy, A Waif's Rise from Poverty, Life in the West, Out West. In the Tattered Tom Series. Julius, a New York City street boy of unknown parentage, first appeared as a minor character in Alger's Slow and Sure. Julius is selected by the Children's Aid Society (a real-life organization of the post-Civil War times) for resettlement out west. He travels by train to Brookville, Wisconsin. Later, Julius finds a good home with farmer-businessman Ephraim Taylor. While working for Mr. Taylor, Julius assists in the rescue of Taylor’s daughter from a disgruntled Indian. Julius receives a reward of $250, which he uses as a down payment on a house and land. He must work hard to pay off his mortgage and try to be a role model for other street boys. Julius was one of Alger's most popular books and the protagonist was a beloved character.
