ILLUSTRATED - An orphaned newsboy struggles to survive on the streets of New York City until he discovers the secret of his parentage. Nelson, a New York newsboy, lives with a sailor by the name of Sam Pepper. Living with Mr. Morton is a niece, Gertrude, and a nephew, Homer Bulson, who intends to marry his cousin Gertrude in order to inherit Mr. Morton's vast estate. Nelson, and a friend, purchase a news stand. While working, Nelson meets Gertrude Morton, and helps her when Mr. Morton suspects her of robbing his safe and asks her to leave. In actuality, Pepper and Bulson are the perpetrators. Bulson, now desperate, entices Gertrude away from the city to a lonely shack and holds her there. Coincidentally, Nelson stumbles onto the cabin, frees her and returns with her to New York. The story climaxes when Sam Pepper is killed in an elevated railway accident, but not before making a last confession to reverse the fortune of all.
