The Adventures of a New York Telegraph Boy
ILLUSTRATED - young messenger boy in New York is hired to guard a house from burglars and ends up discovering his miserly guardian's family secrets. When Old Jerry, telegraph boy Paul Parton’s guardian, becomes ill, Paul is surprised to discover that he possesses bankbooks and stock worth a considerable amount of money. However, Old Jerry believes that he is desperately poor, and as a result he has hoarded every penny. To aid in the man’s recovery, Paul asks Old Jerry’s family to move in with them and nurse him back to health. Paul is then sent to Rockwell, Connecticut, at the request of the Cunningham family, whom he has helped in the past. They believe that their friend is being swindled by Mrs. Mercur, a crafty housekeeper. When Paul confronts the housekeeper, she is discharged. He is again rewarded for his noble efforts, and, bolstered by this, decides his path in life.
