The Hebrew-origin names “Judea-Samaria” have been Israel’s hill country’s names

for millennia. The UN used them in 1947. They’re not the media’s “Biblical name for the West Bank,” which Jordan coined in 1951. The media’s “traditionally Arab East” Jerusalem never existed. Jerusalem has been a unified city except for 19 of the past 3,000 years, capital of 3 natives states, all Jewish, and with a renewed Jewish majority since the 1800’s. Jordan’s 1948-67 seizure of the Old City and City of David, with their Jewish and Christian historic and holy places, and nearby neighborhoods didn’t create a new city. Jews are not “settlers’ in a land in which Jews have lived for millennia, while Arabs there live in neighborhoods, towns and villages.”

The 1949 Israel-Jordan armistice agreement’s military ceasefire line, succeeded by the far more secure for Israel post-1967 war ceasefire line, was not Israel’s permanent

“1967 border” in international law. This is the tip of the iceberg. Abbas isn’t “moderate” and Netanyahu “hardline.”

The 1948 Arab invasion wasn’t “the war that followed Israel’s creation” without the invading Arab states even named. Terrorists aren’t “militants” and Israel’s response against them not “retaliation.” And Very Much More.

From A-to-Z, the media’s Israel-denigrating terms are all here in this book.

-          David Bedein- Director Israel Resource News Agency, and Center for Near East Policy Research

Pressing Israel by Lee Bender and Jerry Verlin confronts the mainstream media's biased coverage of Israel.  The presence of a multitude of foreign reporters who prefer to be based in Jerusalem rather than in Gaza, Ramallah, Damascus, or elsewhere in the Middle East, due to the freedoms and comforts Israel provides is used against this open democracy in the most vicious and inaccurate ways.  Lee Bender and Jerry Verlin deal accurately and effectively with the buzz words that dominates the media's discourse on the Arab Palestinian-Israeli conflict.  Provocative terms such as "Apartheid state" and "Occupied Territories" are debunked by this useful book. Pressing Israel is an excellent primer for students on campus dealing with the Arab/Muslim/leftist propagandists.

- Joseph Puder- Founder and Director, Interfaith Taskforce for America and Israel (ITAI)

The mainstream media's misinformation and vilification of Israel is the Trojan Horse in the modern-day war against the Jewish People. But this horse does not just enter through the gates, it has vaporized and flows through the printing presses, the bandwidths and the aural passages of every sentient human being. Each of us are continuously assaulted with that noxious gas of anti-Israel vitriol masquerading as facts. Kudos to Messrs Verlin and Bender for creating an easily accessible and fact-filled source for decoding the major organs and language of this potent weapon. From the A-Z section laying out the key terms behind which the weapon enters our consciousness, to the just as vital antidote section which lays out the necessary background tools of truth with which we can immunize ourselves from this weapon, "Pressing Israel" is a must-have and must-read for all who want to attain a healthy understanding of the truth about what is happening in and to Israel.
            - Lori Lowenthal Marcus- President, Z STREET

Pressing Israel is an important book that everyone who cares about Israel should read. It reveals the depth of media bias and exposes how the starting point for conversation about Israel is inherently biased due to the media's repeated use of misleading terms and inaccurate facts. Read it, digest it, and then act upon it so you can speak the truth to the propaganda.

  1. Pressing Israel is a Pressing Problem 5 Star Review

Posted by on 24th Jan 2013

The mainstream media has been faulted for many things but the one thing it has not been accused of is impartiality when it comes to reporting the news about Israel. According to the book’s co-authors, Lee S. Bender and Jerome R. Verlin, the mainstream media skews the news to skewer Israel.

Their contention is that the mainstream media’s bias against Israel is as transparent as it is unfair. The book’s 260 pages provide numerous examples to bolster their assertion. It is written as a two part work in which the first part is in the form of an alphabetic acrostic, a device Verlin uses effectively, to focus on the misleading use of terms by the media, from ‘A’ for ‘Apartheid’ to ‘Z’ for ‘Zionist’. In the second part of the book Bender takes a thematic approach where he brings into focus issues such as the history of the Arab myths, the status of refugees, and the treatment of non-Muslims by Muslims. He crafts his arguments in clear and concise language, supported by well documented facts and figures and peppered with illustrations and references, to drive home his points.

Verlin claims the media engages in deceptive word-smithing to bolster their criticism of Israel while ignoring the transgressions of the Palestinians. He accuses the media of a double standard when it calls Israel to task for the slightest infraction and ignores the more egregious misdeeds of the Palestinians. In addition he successfully pierces the miasma of misinformation about Israel and the Palestinians which he points out have become de rigueur by the mainstream media which fawns over the Palestinians, even when they are wrong.

Bender, who like Verlin is a lawyer and active member of the ZOA, is much attuned to the power of words and the importance placed upon using them accurately and effectively. Whereas Verlin attempts to expose the media’s bias through its use of euphemisms, such as substituting ‘terrorist’ with ‘militant’, Bender takes quite a different tack. He takes the reader through a well-documented journey of historical facts in an effort to bring clarity to an otherwise slanted accounting of history which the media presents in an effort to smear Israel or ignore its accomplishments. For example the authors point out that the name ‘Palestine’ refers to a land and not a people. The term ‘Palestinian’ was coined, not millennia ago, but in much more recent times of the 1960s. Bender points out that the British Mandate declared anyone born and living in Israel as a Palestinian, whether he or she is a Jew, Christian or Muslim. Lies, like the legendary Gordian Knot, are difficult to unloose but Bender and Verlin deftly slice through the nub of the media’s misrepresentations, thus managing to set the record straight for the reader.

The work is an easy read and would make a valuable reference book for your paper or digital library. It is well documented, well-illustrated and peppered with charts and photos to help make the authors’ case countering the media’s bias against Israel. I highly recommend this work for anyone who wants to obtain clarity of issues about the Arab-Israeli conflict - which only facts can convey.
