He works on the Deacon’s farm, but soon realizes that he dislikes farm work. Sam escapes to New York City, with money he has appropriated for himself from the Deacon.  Life in the city proves to be tougher than Sam anticipates. On the first night, he is robbed and must sleep in the streets. He eventually earns money by passing out circulars for a podiatrist. When the doctor is away, he foolishly decides to perform an operation and almost removes a patient's toe. The doctor decides to give him a second chance. However, Sam takes advantage of this and is eventually fired.  After further adventures, Sam remains a mischievous boy with little hope for reform. However, the reader is asked to follow Sam as he continues his adventures in Sam's Chance.
