TRY AND TRUST by Horatio Alger

The Story of a Bound Boy

ILLUSTRATED -   Poor orphaned Herbert Mason becomes bondservant to an Ohio farmer; eventually he wins his freedom and goes to New York. Aka: Abner Holden's Bound Boy, Trial and Adventures of Herbert Mason. In the Luck and Pluck Series.  Benjamin Stanton, a wealthy New York store owner and a brother of Herbert's mother, refuses to become Herbert’s guardian when his mother dies. Herbert must therefore live with Abner Holden, who allows him to work for his room and board.  When Holden tries to flog him for telling the truth about a lame horse he is trying to sell, Herbert runs away. He meets a hermit named Ralph, secretly a wealthy man. Ralph takes an interest in Herbert and gives him money to travel to New York City.  After being robbed in the city, Herbert is overjoyed when he sees Ralph, who has come to New York to confront Mr. Stanton. Ralph’s solid evidence against the untrustworthy Stanton settles Herbert’s problems once and for all.
